Sean Combs on Trial

New York, NY – The high-profile sex trafficking and racketeering trial of hip-hop mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs is drawing to a close in a Manhattan federal court, with closing arguments having concluded and the jury set to begin deliberations. The seven-week trial has brought to light a series of disturbing allegations, painting a picture of a “criminal enterprise” that, according to prosecutors, allowed Combs to abuse and exploit women for years.

Combs, 55, has pleaded not guilty to five felony charges: one count of racketeering conspiracy, two counts of sex trafficking by force, fraud, or coercion, and two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution. If convicted, he faces a potential sentence of 15 years to life in prison. He has remained incarcerated without bail since his arrest in September 2024, with judges deeming him a danger to the community.

The prosecution, which called 34 witnesses, has argued that Combs leveraged his fame, wealth, and power to coerce women into drug-fueled sex parties, often referred to as “freak-offs” or “hotel nights,” involving hired male sex workers. Assistant U.S. Attorney Christy Slavik, in her closing arguments, asserted that Combs “committed crime after crime” for two decades, believing he was “above the law.” She emphasized that Combs “counted on silence and shame” and used a “small army” of employees to facilitate his alleged crimes and cover them up.

Central to the prosecution’s case have been the testimonies of two of Combs’ former girlfriends: Casandra “Cassie” Ventura and a model who testified under the pseudonym “Jane.” Cassie, a singer who dated Combs from 2007 to 2018, testified for four days, detailing allegations of physical and sexual abuse, including being forced into sex acts with strangers. Jurors were shown a 2016 security video of Combs assaulting Cassie at a Los Angeles hotel, an incident she said occurred as she tried to leave one of these encounters. Cassie had previously filed a lawsuit against Combs in 2023, which was settled within hours for $20 million.

“Jane,” who dated Combs from 2021 until his arrest, testified for six days, claiming she felt pressured and “obligated” to participate in “hotel nights” with hired sex workers, despite her repeated objections. She stated that Combs paid her rent and threatened to release sex videos if she did not comply.

Other witnesses included rapper Kid Cudi, who testified that Combs broke into his home and that his car was firebombed after he dated Cassie, and former Combs employees who described a climate of fear and control.

The defense, led by attorney Marc Agnifilo, has vehemently denied the charges, portraying the prosecution as overzealous and their case as a “fake trial.” While conceding that Combs was “abusive – physical, emotional, psychological, sexual abuse,” Agnifilo argued that this behavior, however regrettable, does not amount to sex trafficking or racketeering. He claimed that the “freak-offs” were consensual sexual encounters consistent with a “swinger lifestyle” and that the recreational drug use was exaggerated by prosecutors. Agnifilo questioned the notion of a criminal enterprise, stating, “Did any witness get on that witness stand and say yes, I was part of a racketeering enterprise — I engaged in racketeering?”

Combs himself opted not to testify, a decision he confirmed to the judge. The defense rested their case after a brief presentation, relying heavily on lengthy cross-examinations of government witnesses to challenge their credibility and the prosecution’s narrative.

The jury will now deliberate to determine whether the prosecution has proven beyond a reasonable doubt that Sean “Diddy” Combs ran a criminal enterprise engaged in sex trafficking and other illicit activities, or if, as the defense maintains, he was merely living a private, albeit controversial, lifestyle. The verdict in this landmark trial is eagerly awaited, with profound implications for the music mogul and the broader entertainment industry.
