Durham, NC – Khaman Maluach, the towering 7-foot-2 center out of Duke University, has officially embarked on his NBA journey, being selected 10th overall in the recent NBA Draft. His selection marks him as one of three Duke players to land in the top 10, alongside Cooper Flagg and Kon Knueppel, solidifying Duke’s continued prominence in producing NBA talent.

Maluach’s path to the NBA is a unique one, originating from South Sudan and having honed his skills at the NBA Academy Africa before committing to Duke. His freshman season with the Blue Devils saw him average 8.6 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks per game, showcasing flashes of the elite rim protector and efficient interior scorer he is projected to become. He boasted an impressive 71.2% field goal percentage, largely due to his effectiveness on dunks and putbacks.

A Defensive Anchor with Untapped Potential

What truly sets Maluach apart is his physical profile and defensive upside. With a staggering 7-foot-6 3/4 inch wingspan and a 9-foot-6 inch standing reach, he possesses the ideal tools to be an impactful shot-blocker and rim deterrent at the next level. Scouts have lauded his ability to alter shots simply by his presence and his developing instincts for timing and verticality. While still raw defensively, his lateral mobility for his size allows him to briefly switch onto guards, a valuable asset in today’s NBA.

Offensively, Maluach is primarily a rim-runner and lob threat. His efficiency in pick-and-roll situations and on cuts is notable, and his soft touch around the basket suggests potential for further development. While his outside shot is still a work in progress (25% from three-point range at Duke), his 76.6% free throw shooting offers a promising indicator of his touch and feel, hinting at a possible expansion of his offensive game in time.

Comparisons and Projections

Many draft experts draw comparisons between Maluach and current NBA defensive stalwarts like Rudy Gobert, particularly in their early career stages. The consensus among scouts and oddsmakers was that Maluach would be a lottery pick, with most projections placing him within the top 10. His youth (he turns 19 in September) further adds to his appeal, signifying significant room for growth both physically and in terms of skill development.

Maluach’s journey has not been without its unique challenges. Reports emerged during the draft that his U.S. visa had been revoked by the Trump administration, creating potential obstacles for his ability to play in the NBA. However, the NBA’s international operations expressed their commitment to supporting him in obtaining the necessary P-1 work visa, emphasizing their dedication to making dreams come true for international athletes.

As Khaman Maluach now prepares to join the Phoenix Suns (as part of a trade agreed upon with the Houston Rockets), the basketball world eagerly anticipates watching his development. With his elite physical tools, high motor, and dedication to improvement, Maluach has the potential to become a foundational piece for his new team and a significant force in the NBA for years to come.
