Divine Ikubor, the young Nigerian sensation known globally as Rema, has taken the international music scene by storm with his unique sound and captivating stage presence. Born on May 1, 2000, in Benin City, Nigeria, Rema’s journey from performing in churches to becoming a global superstar is a testament to his talent and innovative approach to Afrobeats.

Rema’s foray into music began during his secondary school years, where he honed his skills in singing and rapping. His early career saw him performing alongside Alpha P in a church setting. However, his big break came in 2019 when a viral freestyle on Instagram, set to D’Prince’s “Gucci Gang,” caught the attention of the music executive. This led to a record deal with D’Prince’s Jonzing World, an imprint of the renowned Mavin Records.

His initial releases in 2019, including the EPs “Rema,” “Freestyle EP,” and “Bad Commando,” introduced the world to his distinct voice and genre-bending style. Tracks like “Dumebi” resonated widely, showcasing his ability to blend catchy melodies with Afrobeat rhythms. Notably, his song “Iron Man” was featured on Barack Obama’s Summer Playlist in 2019, further amplifying his rising profile.

However, it was the emergence of what Rema coined “Afrorave” that truly set him apart. This genre fusion incorporates elements of Afrobeats with Arabian and Indian influences, creating a vibrant and unique sonic landscape. His debut album, “Rave & Roses,” released in March 2022, fully embodied this style and featured collaborations with international artists such as 6lack, Chris Brown, AJ Tracey, and Yseult. The album achieved commercial success, charting multiple songs on the US Billboard Afrobeats Chart.

The standout track from “Rave & Roses” was undoubtedly “Calm Down.” This infectious song gained immense international recognition, reaching number three on the Billboard Hot 100, bolstered by a hugely popular remix featuring Selena Gomez. “Calm Down” broke numerous records, including spending a record-setting 58 weeks atop the Billboard Afrobeats Songs chart and becoming the highest-charting African song on the US charts. Its global success was further cemented when both versions of the song surpassed one billion streams.

Rema’s impact extends beyond chart success. He has garnered numerous awards, including an MTV Video Music Award for Best Afrobeats Video and a Billboard Music Award for Top Afrobeats Song. In November 2022, he was recognized for achieving one billion streams worldwide. His sophomore album, “Heis,” released in July 2024, continued to explore his Afrorave sound and featured collaborations with artists like Shallipopi and ODUMODUBLVCK. The album reached the top five in Nigeria, demonstrating his continued dominance in the African music scene.

In 2025, Rema has continued his musical journey with the release of the single “Baby (Is It a Crime)” in February and “Bout U” in April. “Bout U” delves into themes of love and introspection, showcasing his growth as a songwriter and his ability to connect with audiences on an emotional level.

Rema’s rapid ascent to global stardom highlights the increasing influence and appeal of Afrobeats on the international stage. His innovative sound and undeniable talent have positioned him as a leading figure in the next generation of African artists, captivating audiences worldwide and solidifying his place in Afrobeats history.
